Rehabilitation Services
At Forrest Health, we have specialized rehabilitation teams for one purpose: your recovery. Because we know that each patient's recovery path is different, we offer a wide variety of personalized therapy and care.
Rehabilitation services are offered as inpatient or outpatient and are available through all Forrest Health hospitals.
- Forrest General Inpatient Rehabilitation Center is an extensive program for patients who need several hours of therapy each day. This service is for patients who have medical needs and functional disabilities but are not sick enough to stay in the hospital. A referral from a physician is required and a process for determination if admission criteria are met to include needing intensive rehabilitation by a team of Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapists.
- Our outpatient rehabilitation offers flexibility to meet the patient's schedule. Our Forrest Health Outpatients Clinics are located throughout our service areas and are for patients who no longer need to be in a hospital or hospital facility for their care. Patients can safely come for their physical, occupational, and speech therapy visits at a convenient location.
- The Outpatient Pediatric Rehabilitation at Forrest General Hospital (located at the family YMCA in Hattiesburg) offers therapy services for little ones with special needs for growth and development. Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapist with specialized training and experience are here for your family.

What is an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility?
A medical rehabilitation hospital, also known as an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF), is a type of specialty hospital that focuses on treating people recovering from debilitating injuries, illnesses, surgeries, and chronic medical conditions. Inpatient rehabilitation refers to the highest level of physical rehabilitation that a patient can receive when compared to skilled nursing, home health or outpatient therapy services.
What is the difference between an Inpatient Rehab Facility (IRF) and a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)?
In a SNF Skilled nursing care is provided by trained registered nurses in a medical setting under a doctor's supervision. It's basically the same level of nursing care you get in the hospital. Patients may go from the hospital to a skilled nursing facility to continue recovering after an illness, injury or surgery. Within a hospital, Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) is a nursing facility with the staff and equipment to give skilled nursing care and, in most cases, skilled rehabilitative services and other related health services. View more information about our Skilled Nursing Unit. In smaller hospitals, skilled nursing units are also sometimes known as “swing beds”.
If I am at home and having home health therapy, could I quality for an Inpatient Rehab or Skilled nursing facility stay?
Yes, in certain circumstances it is possible that while recovering at home you may have new medical, or rehabilitation needs that qualify you for an inpatient stay at either an Inpatient Rehabilitation or Skilled nursing facility. It is important first to check with your physician if you are experiencing new or worsening conditions or illnesses. Your physician, case manager or social worker may also assist you in getting the paperwork needed or checking your benefit coverage to determine if this is the right step for you to take.
