Curriculum
First Year Family Medicine Resident (PGY1)
The first year of family medicine training will offer a balanced experience in general family medicine. In both the inpatient and outpatient setting, residents will be the first line of contact performing the initial evaluation and subsequent management decisions for each patient. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition of diagnostic and management skills, which will enable effective decision-making and supervisory skills. First-year residents will continue to work closely with second and third-year residents and full-time faculty attending physicians.
Second Year Family Medicine Resident (PGY2)
The second year of training in family medicine will be a transition year that will afford additional autonomy in the clinic and onwards. In addition to gaining experience in the various subspecialties, residents will have increased exposure and begin managing more acutely ill patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Residents assume supervisory roles in inpatient areas and will act independently as night float residents. On subspecialty services, residents will serve as a consultant under the direct supervision of board-certified subspecialists. Additional elective time is available, allowing second-year residents to pursue areas of special interest and begin the early stage of career planning.
Third Year Family Medicine Resident (PGY3)
The third year of residency will offer supervisory experience in inpatient and outpatient services. Third-year residents will be expected to assume some responsibility for assisting in the education of first-year residents and medical students. Third-year residents also have the opportunity to select elective time based on individual needs and interests. Electives can be arranged within a department and with selected community physicians. Lastly, residents will finalize plans for beginning their family medicine careers.
Throughout the three years of residency, our residents will serve as primary care providers to a growing panel of patients to maintain continuity of care. Residents will also have opportunities to interact with the Forrest General service area and the larger Hattiesburg community.
