Neurocritical Care Unit

Forrest General Hospital houses a 50-bed Intensive Care Unit and is home to the newly dedicated eight-bed Neurocritical Care Unit to care for acutely neurologically ill patients.

Neurocritical Care Medical Director, Nathaniel Nowacki, MD, works in collaboration with Forrest General’s well-qualified neurosurgeons and neurologists in caring for this special population of patients. Conditions diagnosed and treated are vast and range anywhere from traumatic brain injuries and acute strokes, to status epilepticus, brain and spinal tumors, and acute neuromuscular disorders.

The Forrest General neurosurgery team works in tandem with the medical staff in performing complex surgeries, including, but not limited to, craniotomies, external ventricular drain, and VP shunt placement.

The nursing staff is specifically trained in caring for this special subset population and is dedicated to ensuring these patients receive the necessary care required for the best clinical outcome.

The addition of the Neurocritical Care Unit is another way Forrest General Hospital continues striving to meet its mission to do what is best for the patient.
